In this series artists tell about their work and how they are inspired by nature.

About the word ‘Struinkunst – Struin comes from the Dutch word Struinen. This means wandering around, looking for things to your liking. In Holland it is also commonly used for walking/hiking in nature, especially referring to wandering off the trails or the beaten tracks. Kunst means art, so Struinkunst (literally meaning ‘wander art’) is all about art and creativity inspired by nature, collecting and using found/recycled/natural objects and following you own (creative) path.

Elizabeth lives in Vermont, USA where she loves to wander and work at the beach. She combines founds shells, sticks and other objects with stitching, crochet, knitting and also (see her Instagram) cyanotype.

Can you tell us about yourself?

+ I live next to a large lake in Vermont, USA
+ I love a pink sky
+ I like to work at the beach

What does ‘Struinen’ means to you?

This is what I do… I wander and gather leaves, sticks, rocks, shells, rusty items. I collect things and then let them tell me how to dance with them in creative collaboration.

When I wander and gather, I get into a flow state that is very satisfying – it is the same feeling
that I have when in the studio creating – especially collage. It is a kind of wandering and gathering
amongst the papers and fabric that I have saved.

How would you describe your art?

My art is earthy, quiet and often references the natural world, the sky, fireflies, etc… I collaborate with nature like a dance partner.

In which way do you give struinen a place in your art?

Struinen is what I do – it is primary… I weave on shells, make prints from leaves, use dirt as pigment, knit with daylily leaves, etc.

What is your dream?

I would love to create a book around my wander/gather thoughts, collections and art.

What is your ultimate (creative) struin tip?

Make it a habit to wander and gather – in all seasons. Immerse yourself in the process, let it be a meditation – bring that feeling into your making – the calm, the quiet, the loveliness of nature.
